Field Notes

Description:

Small (1 to 1.5 in long) butterfly. Blue on the body indicating it is male.

Habitat:

Found on Swamp Rose Mallow - Hibiscus moscheutos, growing in one of my constructed wetlands.

Notes:

Common Checkered-Skipper - Pyrgus communis or White checkered skipper - Pyrgus albescens. Without dissection to look at male reproductive parts or a DNA sample, the two species cannot be told apart.
