Field Notes

Habitat:

Garden pond

Notes:

Found clinging to a rock which fell into my pond while I was cleaning it. I lifted the rock out and left it in sun until I finished cleaning and noticed this when I was going to put it back so put it in the shade. This thing crawled away but I found it dead later. It was about 4-5 cm long.

You're welcome! Yes tadpoles is their favorite dish!
Thanks Mutter, I have updated the page. Now I know what probably ate all my tadpoles!
Hey Malcom, this one is a dragonfly larva, they are aquatic. Before metamorphosis into an adult they start climbing exposed places like reed and the adult will hatch. The old skin can often be found hanging from reed stems.
