Field Notes

Description:

This fungus is also known as Black bulgar. The caps are between 1 and 5 cm in diameter, up to 2 cm tall. They grown in loose clusters on felled logs and dead trees, looking like dark coloured discs or cups (pics 1 & 2), flat above. When young, and at the first glance, they have aspect of some discarded brown berries (pic N° 3) - however, upon the closer inspection, we can distinguish a slit on the top, through which a reddish to blackish mass is visible.

Habitat:

Found on logs and felled trees (pic N°6), left on forest floor on slopes of hills in Geneva lake valley.
