I think this is some kind of fungus. Shades of grey, very textured.

I spotted this growing on some rocks on a viewpoint in Parque Natural do Caraca.

Thanks for the info Mitch. Narrowed it down a little more again.
There are definitely some cool-looking lichens out there. They can be split into three broad categories: crustose (crust-like), foliose (leaf-like and what I believe you have here), and fruiticose (shrub-like). Very neat organisms and an amazing example of mutualistic (probably) symbiosis
Hahahaha! Ok Mitch, so I guess there's not much hope for this one! Oh well, I think it just looks cool as kind of an abstract art photo/painting.
I knew a girl who did her Master's thesis on lichens, and even she was terrible at lichen ID
I think you're right Mitch. At least it's a bit narrowed down. Might be tough to ID it any more specifically....
