Field Notes

Description:

A highly coloured finch with a bright red face and yellow wing patch.

Habitat:

They live in the trees above the tide line of the river near my house.

Notes:

I found a group of these males (about 5) in one area, all twittering away in a lovely song, and wagging around in some kind of display. They all seemed to be taking turns to sit at about 4 or 5 specific perches, and all would do their little display. I guess there were some females watching this little show, waiting to be impressed!

They move around in flocks most of the time, constantly chattering. The flocks tend to be much larger and mixed with other finches/tits/nuthatches/treecreepers etc. during winter. We have lots here also, after we harvested our olives last week we pruned all the trees and found loads of nests left by goldfinches and serins.
Ah Malcolm, I didn't know that! All this time, I've been assuming the juveniles were females! Well then, I wonder what these little guys were doing!
Are you sure they were all males Laura, males and females look alike except under close examination.
Thanks Renato! They are very colourful, a lovely sight on a sunny day!
