Field Notes

Description:

Found throughout the US, the Great horned owl is a great small animal predator. They are nocturnal, they hunt at night.

Habitat:

Forests and praries. They can survive anywhere that there is a healthy population of small animals, and because they are nocturnal there is little competition from Hawks and Eagles.

Notes:

Every year we have a pair that nest near our yard. It is fun watching them teach their young to hunt and survive. It is a rarity to see them during the day, but we hear them at night outside our windows quite often.
