Field Notes

Description:

This butterfly's upper wings are dark brown with orange and black markings. The underside of the wing tends to be cryptically colored except for the bright orange band on the forewing, which is sometimes partially obscured by the overlapping hindwing.

white spots on the dorsal fore wings near the front margin; reddish bars on dorsal surface of all four wings

Habitat:

Grasslands and forested edges.

Notes:

This is one of the first butterflies we see in this part of Minnesota.
