Hi Gordon thank you. Yes, checked the site, those bugs there were the same, and you are right they are predatory and smells not so pleasant yeah. I was actually blaming the tree for the bad smell.

I'm thinking this may be a larvae of some predatory stink bug. It's ovoid, has a developing pronatum... See some examples here http://bugguide.net/node/view/333311.
