Field Notes

Description:

The member of the Saturniidae family of silk moths. Native to California and found in other states. It was a little worn but normally would be a pinkish orange and black on the fore wings and yellow and black on the hind. It has two dark bands with one dark spot on each forewing. The other black lines are variable. It has a feather like antennae. It is a daylight moth and when I spotted it at first I thought it was a butterfly because of the color, size and speed.

Habitat:

This one is found an elevation of 8500 ft. in the northern Sierras. Near a lake flying around unknown low growing scrub.
