And Neil is the Man when it comes to Kinosternids.
From the photos alone, it definitely could be S. odoratus.
That rather-plain looking domed, oval shell looks like a common musk turtle. The red stripes is a curveball for me. Patrick - were you able to see its head at all? Or its plastron (belly). Descriptions of those could help with the ID.
From the photos and your description I'd say that's a Painted Turtle, not a box turtle
