Odocoileus virginianus
44.8671, -93.183
Field Notes
Description:
White-tailed deer are one of North America's most common big game animals, native to nearly all US states and Canadian provinces and stretching southward into Mexico, Central America, and into northern South America. White-tailed deer are a medium sized deer. Their coats are reddish during the summer and grayish brown in winter. Typical males, called bucks, sport antlers consisting of a main beam with unbranched tines.
Habitat:
Forests and riparian zones along rivers in grasslands.
Notes:
I found this doe and her two fawns feeding along the edge of a road in Fort Snelling State Park. The deer are not hunted in the park and are habituated to people making this a very good place to watch their behavior. In this shot they are foraging for acorns.
