Field Notes

Description:

A medium sized ant (about 12mm long) and readily identified by two large cream coloured spots on the gaster.

Habitat:

These were exploring the trunks of red ironbark (Eucalyptus tricarpa) at a roadside rest area.

Notes:

Although the ant wiki says they especially appear on smooth bark eucalyptus every ironbark in the area seemed to have some.
Widespread throughout temperate Australia and the Kimberley region.
Also known to tend to Lycaenid caterpillars.
