Field Notes

Description:

Happy Halloween! The Roughened Silver Orb Spider builds a small orb web in spaces between shrubs which is typically slanted (often nearly horizontal) rather than vertical; this spider is thus sometimes known as the Horizontal Orb Spider. The first shot is a ventral view, while the silvery back can be seen on the second shot.

Habitat:

Courtyard, suburban garden.

Notes:

Take notice of the trichobothria, which are well visible on the first shot. These elongate bristles function in the detection of airborne vibrations and currents.
