Field Notes

Description:

Smells like garlic, grows like wildfire. Creamy yellow flowers with 5 petals. Grows only in areas with rich, moist soil, mainly the marshy areas. Will not grow in dry soil.

Habitat:

Marshy areas

Notes:

Possibly garlic mustard? Seems invasive. Grows in the same spot every year.

It's not garlic mustard but marsh marigold (Caltha palustris). See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marsh_marigold for more information. Garlic mustard has thin leaves and white flowers, while marsh marigold has thick, leathery leaves with yellow flowers. Good idea though using your nose! Too few of us use only our eyes!
