Description:
This is a relatively small vulture with a wingspan of about 1.5 meters (5 feet). Its plumage is black, the head/face is featherless and black. The bill is powerfully built and has a hook.
Habitat:
It inhabits relatively open areas of scrub, grasslands and open forests from the southeastern United States and south into South America. It often is found feeding at garbage dumps.
