Field Notes

Description:

Common brushtail possum mother and young riding a bird feeder in my former home west of Brisbane. After emerging from the pouch the young remains with its mother for up to a couple of months, riding on her back and suckling from the pouch when necessary.

Habitat:

Forests, gardens, cities and suburbs. Native to Australia, a pest in New Zealand.

Notes:

You become aware of possum activity at night through their territorial call, a very harsh hissing.
