Field Notes

Description:

This shrimp predominantly eats starfish, even crown of thorns starfish, like in this photo. They are usually found in pairs. The harlequin shrimp will flip over a starfish to feed on its tube feet, usually dragging it into a safe hole to feast. They have been known to 'feed' their starfish to keep them alive longer, thus allowing them to have a meal for longer. If there are no starfish, they will sometimes feed on the tube feet of sea urchins.
