Description:

This a different type of peacock from the one we are used to see at the zoos. I have found this one in a small zoo in the klongs of Bangkok.
Can anyone help me ID it?

the neck should be a rich green with no blue, the wings should be black and covered in brilliant green with little barring. Finally, the neck should be bright green and the legs and profile is skinnier. Overall, the Green Peafowl appears a more robust and handsome bird, though it does not fare well in cold weather.
Thanks for the explanation, legendfrank :-) and how can you distinguish the hybrid in the picture from the original green peafowl? (just curious :-)
yes the two species are closely related enough that hybrids are still fertile. Indeed, this bird looks like it may be a 2nd generation hybrid. In the end, birds will look almost identical to one of the original species. It is called an Emerald Spaulding is when there is over 75% Green Peafowl blood.
Your comment is understand. I find in young stage many male Peacocks had such uncommon non spectacular feathers like female. In monsoon with smell of soil many mammals and birds had such male attitude seen here in Peacock like to attract females. Breeding of Peacock I do not have idea.
Ashish: of course is a male .. :-) I was just wondering if it is a hybrid between two species -as legendfrank says- whether he would be able to mate to a female and produce chicks..Because for example mules are the result of female horse bred with a male donkey and they are hybrids but sterile..understand better my question now?
Very interesting and the color is more muted, but still beautiful.
Marta this is young male..!!
Uy..I did not know..are the hybrids also able to breed?
no it's not a pure Green Peacock. This is a hybrid between the Indian and Green Peafowl, known as a Spaulding. This is a problem because the Green Peafowl is endangered in the wild and instead breeders have hybridized the two species.
Yes its beautiful. Green Peacock..Male!! Green Peacocks has Pink feathers inside their wings.
That is funny. Maybe someone can get us a shot of his "big boy" plumage. (glad I could help; just ran across the info the other day)
and sure may be a yearling..he was courting a pigeon..LOL!
Many thanks for the ID! Indeed, it looks like this type of peafowl.
Javan green peafowl--from my reading probably a yearling. The tall tightly bundled head crest is another clue. Worth a look?
