Eastern Grey Squirrel
Sciurus carolinensis
33.7748, -84.2963
Field Notes
Description:
The size of small house cats, these squirels are mostly grey with tan and white undercoats. They have white bellies and a white stripe on their tails. They live in trees and search for food on the ground. They will chase each other around the trunks of trees in a spiral. They will shake their tail and make a sucking/chirping sound with their teeth. They will hold nuts with their front paws, but carry small things in their mouths and run on all four legs.
Habitat:
suburbia, attics, trees. Prolific.
Notes:
While these guys can be "cute" they are considered a pest around here, because they will get into bird feeders and attics. Some even call them "tree rats." Cars, outside cats and large birds seem to be their only predators in our neighborhood.
