Field Notes

Description:

This is a relatively dainty-looking emerald averaging a little over 2 cm in length. Thorax is emerald green with brown hair, legs are black as is the abdomen. Eyes are metallic green in adults and brownish in the sub-adults. The abdomen is slightly swollen at the tip.

Habitat:

Marshy edges of boggy streams.

Thanks Joseph. This dragonfly had captured a large unidentified insect and eaten it here. I'm not sure what happened next, but this dragonfly, which I had been pursuing for the previous 15 minutes became torpid, went to sleep, something, and let me approach very closely and photograph it for at least 20 minutes. I've seen this behavior in other dragonflies on occasion as well. Maybe they take a nap after a big meal just as people do?
