Wildlife Spotting

These langurs are named after the Hindu monkey-god Hanuman, and are the sacred monkey of India. Head and body length: Female: 40-68cm, Male: 51-78cm. Tail length: 69-101cm. Weight: Female 11.2kg, Male: 18.3kg.The colour of their fur ranges from grey, dark brown to golden with varying amounts of black, depending on the subspecies. They also vary in size - subspecies from the southern part of their range are smaller than those from the north.
They live in groups of 11-64, typically 1 male:multi-female, but occasionally multimale:multifemale. They have a home range of 200-1200ha. Hanuman langurs spend up to 80 per cent of their time on the ground, although they will also spend time in the trees. They are diurnal and move quadrupedally. When a new male takes over a troop, he systematically kills all the infants sired by the previous alpha male.
