Field Notes

Description:

A European honeybee spotted in a nearby meadow. The flower is a field scabious (Knautia arvensis).

Habitat:

Native to Europe, Asia, and Africa. Introduced to the Americas.

Notes:

Recent years have seen a worrying decline in European honey bee colonies (Colony Collapse Disaster). Various reasons for this have been brought forward, including climate change, pesticides and the effect of a parasite. Local beekeepers had no honey 2 years ago, but bees seemed to return last year. The second shot shows beehives in a neighbouring meadow which were buzzing with activity.
