Field Notes

Description:

Ping pong size reddish purple jellyfish. They have a good sting too.
These stingers made the National news. No one seems to know why they are washing up on Florida beaches by the thousands. They are deep water jellyfish and ones we never see. They are also spreading north on the Florida coast.

Notes:

Thousands of these jellyfish washed up along Cocoa Beach on Memorial Day weekend, 2011. They just kept coming in with the tide.
