Field Notes

Description:

Bat relatively large, I estimate that it is about 25 cm in wingspan, its legs are long compared to other bats that I have seen, and I saw him hunting in the sea while I was on a sailboat about 350 meters from the beach. It was easy to observe them catching fish, even flying fish as seen in the fifth photo.

Habitat:

Bosque lluvioso, de America Tropial. orilla de rios

Congratulations Jonathan, your fishing bat is our Spotting of the Day: "Only a few bat species feed on fish, and one of them is the Greater Bulldog Bat (Noctilio leporinus), our Spotting of the Day. Known in Spanish as "murciélago pescador" (fishing bat), it is a large bat with curved claws adapted to catching fish. Like other bats it uses echolocation for hunting, adapted in this case to detect water ripples made by swimming fish".
