Field Notes

Description:

I love these guys! The praying mantis is a ruthless hunter, not only do they eat other insects but they will hunt each other as well. They will even prey on nestling birds if given the chance. But to see one always makes my day :)

Habitat:

This specimen was on a large 'Prosopis glandulosa' in the middle of a shrubby desert.

Hi RSR, this looks like a female from genus Stagmomantis. There are a couple of species in your area. Do you have any additional views of the face? This is either Stagmomantis carolina or Stagmomantis limbata. S. limbata has a blue upper lip (one of the easier distinctions). http://bugguide.net/node/view/4820/bgpage Also, this would be a nice addition to the global mantis mission: http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/15738247
