Field Notes

Description:

This butterfly was landing on the other side of a steep ravine and I couldn't get close to it. It was medium sized, metallic silver-blue with dark spots. The underside of the wings was very different (pictures 2 and 3). It kept re-landing on the same leaf and always head down. Family Nymphalidae.
The female is quite different: brown with white lines and spots: See:
http://www.naba.org/chapters/nabast/postverta.html.

Habitat:

Heavy shrubbery along the highway between San Cristobal de Las Casas and Tuxtla Gutierrez, km 11.5, 865 meters.

Thank you so much Martin. I was so frustrated that I couldn't get close to it. I was wishing I was Elasti-Girl (and not for the first time either!). I had never seen it before and am amazed how different the female is.
Very nice nymphalidae butterfly. The female is brown.
