Description:

The Century Plants Stem 3-14 feet. leaves to 15 inches. No century plant has been known to reach the age of 100 years, although many species live decades before putting out their treelike stalks. The tubular yellow flowers (compact rosette with long stamens, in dense clusters along the upper part of a stout stalk) are pollinated by long-tongued bats, which crawl down the spikes or hover in midair while lapping the sweet nectar. They die after flowering.

Habitat:

Deserts, dry plains, slopes. Bloom in May-June.

Notes:

These were on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon in Arizona.
