Field Notes

Description:

Small brightly colored kingfisher of African wetland regions

Habitat:

Impalila Island Conservancy

Notes:

Spotting 2222! I can now take a break from Africa and get caught up on locals for for awhile. Taken on our last day when host Steve learned that we hadn't yet seen these or gotten a good view of hippos. He also wanted us to see the otters, and I'm pretty sure after the sharp words to his guide, there would be more otter spotting in the future. Alas, not with our group.

He got us the bst pics we'd had thus far of hippos, explained that they had recenly been hunted from the Zambia side and were edgy. Then he found us not one, but two of these magnificant tiny birds. This is a juvenile that hasn't quite lost the bit of black on its bill

Thank you. So tough getting focus on a bird this small in a moving boat. Love the challenge
Thank you, Luis. This was on my MUST see list. Steve Ellis from Impalila did his best to fulfill my must see list. Great guy.
