Field Notes

Description:

Mostly black with green markings on the body. Wings are interlaced with green veins. About 2 inches in length, including the wings. Late season species: adults emerge in mid-summer.

Habitat:

Spotted near South Tamarac Lake. Found in pine woodlands and mixed forests. This species is found scattered across the eastern Plains states, including Minnesota. Mature males sing from treetops, newly-emerged adults may be found in low vegetation.

Notes:

Dog-day is a reference to the hot "dog days" of late summer when this species is heard singing.
