Description:

For the past six or seven months, I have been very concerned that the number of Signature Spiders (Argiope luzona) in our area seemed to have diminished considerably. I was trying to think what might have caused this and could I do anything to help. However, I am relieved to be able to say, with some confidence that they appear to be bouncing back, quite suddenly and in great numbers. The first three sub-adult A. luzona shown in the above photos were spotted yesterday and the second three were spotted today. All six of them had woven their webs with discoid stabilimenta on a mango tree which has been a "hot spot" for this species over recent years. I spotted another six of these spiders (in the same place) today, in addition to those shown, and I will put them on my next spotting. So, as far as I can see, my favourite spiders are back in strong numbers, as somebody once said "Smack dab in the middle of Argiope land".

Habitat:

All of the Signature Spiders shown here were spotted today in the rice mill front yard. All of their webs were moored on the stems of a Blushing Philodendron (Philodendron erubescens). This is a climbing plant, growing on the trunk of a very big, old Mango Tree.
