Field Notes

Description:

Branches are approximately 1-5 mm thick and are white to pale yellow at first - sometimes darkening to tan or developing pinkish hues; tips are crowned with a shallow depression and 3-6 points, colored like the branches or becoming brownish.

Habitat:

Grows alone or gregariously on dead wood. Widely distributed in eastern North America, the Rocky Mountains, and Mexico, but absent or rare on the West Coast.
