Field Notes

Habitat:

This Argiope luzona sub-adult female was spotted in the rice mill front yard. Its web was moored on some vines which were growing on the trunk of a very old Mango Tree.

Notes:

This very small spider is a female Argiope luzona, sub-adult. It is on the far side of its web, showing its ventral view. It was sitting on the front of its web when I first saw it, but my approach startled it and it shuttled to the far side and remained there. At this early stage in its development, a sub-adult male's cephalothorax is as wide, or wider than its abdomen. The female's cephalothorax is much smaller, in relation to its abdomen. So, the spider shown here is a female and she is sitting on her web decoration (at the hub of her web). This kind of decoration is called a "Discoid Stabilimentum".
