Description:

I spotted this duck at a park in Cape Coral, FL. I'm not sure if it's a Florida Mottled Duck or a female Mallard?

There are ways that some expert birders around here determine whether of not the ducks are hybrids but I'm not sure what they look for...but I've seen many pics of hybrids with white bars above & below the speculum. I'll ask a friend this weekend and see if there is a good way to tell. I know that the pres of our Audubon Society says almost all are hybrids that we see here in FL. Great you have you aboard...you're not far away. Ever go to Bunche Beach? Great for shorebirds! Come visit the Celery Fields in Sarasota sometime.
Thanks Ceherzog! I really wasn't sure because I had spoken with somebody from a local wildlife rehab facility here and they told me the same thing that there are very few mallards in FL. But then I read that the Mottled duck lacks the upper white wing bar on the speculum and may have one below, that's mostly why I went with the Mallard ID. http://myfwc.com/wildlifehabitats/profiles/birds/waterfowl/mottled-ducks/ I look forward to more of your postings as well, you have great pictures.
Hey Suzy...welcome to Project Noah. It's most likely a Mottled or a hybrid between Mallard & Mottled, as we call them "Muddled" Duck. Many feel there are no pure Mallards in FL...or very few. I look forward to more posting from another FL person!
