Description:

A black-winged stilt, spotted here in the Eastern mangroves near Abu Dhabi, UAE, a sensitive and highly threatened environment. A widely distributed very long-legged wading bird.

Habitat:

Marshes, shallow lakes and ponds, mangroves.

I was impressed when I saw the amount of active birders over there, yes. There's a lot of active birders here too, but the backup of some political heavy weights is obviously lacking. Birds are still getting shot by the hundreds and a lot of nature destroyed, be it desert or coastal :(
I can't say much about Dubai but I know there are some very active birders there. There is a actually a lot of nature in and around Abu Dhabi and some very dynamic natural history and conservation groups. All of it of course is highly sensitive and threatened by development, but the awareness is there.
Beautiful photo! I love these guys with their long legs! We made it to Dubai twice, but not to Abu Dhabi - and in both cases I've not seen much of nature :(
