Field Notes

Description:

This is a gray to brown water snake with dark bands on the front portion of the body, then the bands turn into blotches posteriorly. Dorsal scales are keeled. I didn't measure this one, but I'd guess its length to be around 3 feet. The body of this individual is very broad and stout, and it always had the one eye on me!

Habitat:

A rocky embankment that partially damns up Flat Branch Creek, a small to medium sized freshwater stream.

Notes:

Seems like a small population is currently living all over this embankment. I saw 4 adults and several juveniles within a matter of minutes.
