It's also my understanding that the red squirrel would be the common one in Croatia. Their coat colour can vary from red to black. I guess the size would be the definite factor to differentiate it from a potential grey squirrel invader: the Eurasian red squirrel is much smaller. In any case he was a lot of fun to watch!
I have read there are different melanic forms in some species of squirrels, and I think that the red one is the common one in Croatia but the grey one is an invader species which came from UK.
In google images I can see some of the same species when I look for 'black squirrel Croatia', but I don't know what is the real name of this species
Any idea what he is? He lacks brushes on the ears but could still be Sciurus vulgaris depending on the age/season. In my experience they are indeed very shy.
It was very fast and It never keep in a place for more than 3 seconds. Squirrels in Plitvice national Park (Croatia) are very shy, in other places they are very easy to observe.
I spent 14 days in Croatia last year and I visited Plitvice and Krka National Parks, these places are awesome and the beaches are perfect for diving, these have a very rich sea life. I enjoyed a lot in Croatia, I want to go again some day
