Field Notes

Description:

It is a small butterfly in the family (nymphalidae) with a wingspan of 30 mm. The butterfly has orange and black wings with orange and a creme color on the underside. The butterfly can be identified by having more black on the front side than the Pearl crescent that is another species that is similar.

Habitat:

Semi-urban, Fort Worth, Texas. This one was found on a sunny evening day. The area was a open field with lots of wildflowers.

Notes:

There are several flights (early spring to late fall) in the northern part of the range and nearly year round in peninsular Florida. Males patrol open areas near host plants for females. Mating occurs primarily during mid-day. Eggs are laid in clusters on the undersides of leaves of the fogfruit host plants. The common host throughout much of Florida is turkey tangle fogfruit (Phyla nodiflora).
