Field Notes

Description:

juvenile garter snakes, under 1ft long, there were a total of 6 on one days count, several aggregated together, others were spread out under wood through the meadow.

Habitat:

Curious and hiding between scrap wood planks in a meadow. I was making a board walk nature trail with 4x4s and found out that almost half a dozen snakes were under it the next day, so I had to raise the 4x4 planks up on short end supports and I placed flat sheets of old wood under them. The baby snakes seem to hunt the wild cockroach species attracted and they like the shade under the wood sheets (and I can walk over them and not disturb their rest!
