Field Notes

Description:

Pointed beak suitable for probing the silt deposited by the river water. Upperparts greying or light brown, as is the neck. Belly is white. Long, unfeathered legs suitable for wading.

Habitat:

Spotted a pair of these birds feeding by the River Hooghly at Poojali, Achipur, Kolkata. The tide was out so the silt-laden exposed region which had lots of brick pieces (there is a kiln nearby) was happy hunting grounds...lots of crabs and snails too, which were spotted. Stranded fish too I presume!
