This large wasp was sitting on a piece wood, but flew away when I got too close

That's exactly it! Thanks for the ID. I've updated this spotting. I couldn't find much info on a common name.
Looked very similar, but the distinctive white band on the abdomen was missing on this specimen. Thanks for the suggestion!
