Wow what a beautiful moth! Just look at those eyespots!
I'd suggest that this, while it looks like a buckeye butterfly, is probably a polyphemus moth (Antheraea polyphemus). Moths, especially the males have these big feathery antennae; butterflies have more slender antennae. See http://bugguide.net/node/view/427/bgimage for polyphemus examples. These moths are huge. Beautiful insect, isn't it? Nice spotting!
