Field Notes

Description:

In Alaska we call them Brown bears. In the lower 48 they're known as Grizzlies though they are the same animal. The name Grizzly is usually known for an inland bear, whereas Brown Bear seems more coastal. Notice the distinctive hump between front shoulders.

Habitat:

Alder brush, mountain side, coastal. Isanotski Strait connects the North Pacific Ocean to the Bering Sea

Notes:

I went for a ride this evening with the hopes of seeing some mammalian wildlife. First I witnessed a red fox hunt a Norway rat (see spotting from same date earlier this evening). Then further down the road I got to see this awesome brown bear!! It was a very cool experience. I've been here in False Pass for 10 days and leave in 4 days so I'm glad I got this chance to see an bear. Check out my blog for more photos and a short photo essay of my evening at http://northernxposed.blogspot.com
