Field Notes

Description:

8-18.5" (20-47 cm) this one on the larger side of that. Tan to dark brown, often coated with algae or mud. Three rows of weak to prominent keels, serrated or toothed in the back. A massive head with powerful jaws.

Habitat:

Freshwater. Likes soft mud bottoms & abundant vegetation.

Notes:

I snapped a few photos & got it off the road.

I remember these ones from the time I lived in Boston and was hiking in the area or kayaking in the Charles river. Once in a while they make a meal of baby ducklings (only thing I did not like about the turtles but then, hey, I am not vegetarian either)...was she in the middle of the road? Good you could save her then. :-)
