Bear corn

Comments (2)

This is Conopholis americana, a parasitic plant commonly known as bear corn, squaw root or American cancer-root (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conopholis_americana). You caught the inflorescence after flower, with swollen fruits (the corn-looking stuff). This plant takes nutrients from nearby trees rather than photosynthesizing.
