Field Notes

Description:

Thelyphonida is an arachnid order comprising invertebrates commonly known as vinegaroons (also spelled vinegarroons and vinegarones). They are also known as whip scorpions because of their resemblance to true scorpions and because of their whiplike tail.

The guide told me they were rarely seen as they avoid light.

I saw this one on the trunk of a tree near the path.

Habitat:

Vinegaroons are found in tropical and subtropical areas excluding Europe and Australia. They prefer humid, dark places and avoid light.

Taken with flash during a night walk through the rainforest/jungle beside the Braulio Carrillo National Park, Costa Rica.

Hi Pam, thanks for the uploads - but scorpions and spiders aren't insects (see rhe title of my mission). Best, Torsten
