Field Notes

Description:

Hippos come out of their freshwater habitat in the middle of the night to surf the waves in the ocean. This is a pic of the trail they commonly use. This behavior was first observed by National Geographic in their article Surfing Hipppos. I'm not sure what issue it was though. J. Michael Fay's epic walk across Africa in 1999, dubbed the Megatransect, was my inspiration to go to Gabon. His lobbying resulted in the president declaring 13 new national parks. I went to 2 of them, Lope and Loango.

Habitat:

freshwater bordering ocean

Notes:

I spotted these tracks in Loango National Park.
