Field Notes

Description:

Sitting near the entrance of his den in Shamrock Park. Has powerful legs for digging his den. The sand you see is mostly what he has moved.

Habitat:

Sand dune areas, one of the original inhabitants of Florida Beaches.

Notes:

Went to visit some display gardens planted by Master Gardeners and got the bonus of these pictures of the Gopher Tortoise.

Nowadays, the high, dry ground that gophers require for their burrows is also valuable for human housing, so their habitat and numnbers continue to be reduced. It is now illegal to kill, capture, own , buy or sell gophers except by special permit.
