Field Notes

Description:

Chocolate brown butterfly with orange to light creamy shade band in the shape of a horseshoe (upside down). Sitting for short periods on leaves & foliage then quickly fluttering of again. At first I thought it might be a type of moth.

Notes:

I spotted this butterfly in the northern part of Pretoria, South Africa. I was at the foot of the Magaliesberg mountain in a shady area with lush vegetation.

Species ID Suggestions

Garden Commodore

Precis archesia (Summer form pelasgis)

Very close to Lurcher butterfly. Except those dots on the orange bands.
