Field Notes

Description:

The Pied Butcherbird is a medium-sized songbird native to Australia. It grows about 35 cm (14 in) long and has black and white plumage. This is one of a pair of birds I see quite regularly. Very trusting and comfortable around humans, and also very inquisitive. I think they're beautiful birds, and I just adore their lovely black bibs. They always look like they're dressed up for dinner.

Habitat:

Spotted amongst the trees and gardens of the Metroplex on Gateway estate.

Notes:

This fellow was spotted sitting atop an Octopus Agave (Agave vilmoriniana). These plants are currently fruiting, and the flower spike is growing at a rapid pace. It has fast become a favourite perch for the butcherbirds, and every day they are going to go higher and higher.

Thanks guys. I love these birds, and this particular individual is a real character. He/she has been fighting with the miners who are nesting in the area. Quite a racket.
