Field Notes

Description:

(Or maybe P. americana?) Small relative of assassin bugs. Short "beak" and front legs perfect for grabbing prey, as the 3rd and 4th photo show. Unusual markings and ridges along back and sides, pale yellow eyes, and antennae that sweep back from the head. Tends to move quite slowly. I believe that this may be a female due to the lighter coloration.

Habitat:

Wild phlox and other flowers in my garden.

Notes:

One of my favorite bugs to watch. I get quite a few of them each year - sometimes several per plant.
